The Hunger Games reminds me of my favorite survival adventure books of my childhood because it doesn’t matter whether you are in the Catskill Mountains, a Caribbean cay, or an outdoor death match arena you still need the basics to be able to survive.
Water, food, and shelter.
Set in the nation of Panem, “a shining Capital surrounded by twelve outplaying districts”, The Hunger Games emphasizes the value of outdoor skills. On a previous post, I wrote about the ability of people to identify more logos than leaves. Plant identification can be the difference between life and death for sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen and the other contestants that are fighting to the death on live TV.
My only problem with The Hunger Games? It’s a trilogy and I haven’t yet gotten my hands on the other two books. At least The Cay only had one combined prequel/sequel.

My favorite book when I was younger was My Side of the Mountain. (Which ended up being a trilogy, but not really)
