Despite being in a Prius, there is very little about a roadtrip that is environmentally friendly. “Travel Plazas” in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana don’t even have recycling bins! What they do have is tolls and corn.
It’s strange that a big city seems greener than the rural areas driven through to get here but that’s how I feel about Chicago.
Using the USDA database I wrote about Monday I found the Green City Farmer’s Market in Lincoln Park. Wish I could have gone grocery shopping but we still have two time zones to go, so we only had brocoli and cheese quiche for breakfast. I meant to take its picture but ate it without pausing.
Now as I drink local Goose Island Summertime beer from a compostable cup in Chicago’s Millenium Park, it’s clear to me. It’s a breeze to be eco-friendly in the windy city.

Are big cities really “greener” than rural areas? What about rural areas that grow their own food, instead of having it grown elsewhere and then shipped to them? What about less light pollution, car pollution, etc because less people using lights and cars? Cities have to work at being green. Rural farmers are the original green.
