Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone sat unread on my bookshelf for almost seven years. It took an actual act of God – Hurricane Katrina – to make me read it.
I was that desperate for entertainment.
It was the fall of 2005. New Orleans had a curfew in effect at dusk, my roommate had not returned, and television either seemed too depressing or too trivial.
So I read every newspaper, magazine or book I could get my hands on – and finally even The Sorcerer’s Stone.
I ended up reading it one night, forgoing sleep. I was hooked.
But in a world without a library, getting the other books was a matter of knowing the right people. Potter people.
And in the months following Katrina, I became one of them.
Tonight, it will not be hard to find us. We will be gathering, waiting for midnight to strike, for magic to reveal truths, for good to triumph over evil.
For me, the power of Harry Potter is forever linked to the power of mother nature – like twin wands made from the same phoenix feather core.
Have you experienced a natural disaster? What person or object do you associate with it?
